International Relations
Examines the collective interactions of a range of actors on the global stage from nations and states to non-governmental organizations and multinational corporations. Introduces and applies theories and concepts to help students discern recurring patterns. Topics include the rise and decline of great powers, nuclear proliferation, terrorism, the globalization of trade and finance, global inequalities, human rights, and ecological sustainability.

1. Differentiate between domestic and international politics.
2. Discuss the formation of the anarchic state system.
3. Summarize explanations in the literature for the ascendancy of Europe after 1500 C.E.
4. Describe the core beliefs of the major political paradigms (realist, liberal, constructivist, etc.).
5. Trace the origins of WWI, WWII, or the Cold War drawing on multiple levels of analysis.
6. Compare and contrast the League of Nations and the United Nations.
7. Discuss the effects of the Cold War on Third World nations.
8. Evaluate explanations in the literature for the end of the Cold War.
9. Discuss the formation of the Bretton Woods system.
10. Summarize explanations in the literature for the end of the Cold War.
11. Discuss historic attempts to establish international law and justice.
12. Analyze the role of non-governmental organizations in the 20th and 21st centuries.
13. Analyze a contemporary conflict in the non-Western world from various perspectives (politics, religion, ethnicity, geography, economics, etc.).
