Small Animal Pathology&Nursing

Overview of common small animal diseases and the techniques used in the diagnostic process, treatment and care of these patients. The student will become familiar with common infectious and noninfectious diseases with regard to epidemiology, clinical signs, diagnostic testing procedures, therapeutic treatments, measures of prevention, zoonotic potential, and expected outcome. Prerequisite: VET201 with a grade of “C” or higher. Corequisites: VET 202, VET 234, VET LB4, VET LB5, VET 246, VET LB6 and VET 280.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Identify common infectious and non-infectious diseases with regard to epidemiology, clinical signs, diagnostic testing procedures, therapeutic treatments, measures of prevention, zoonotic potential, or prognosis.
2. Discuss how the five vital signs can be used to assess the health status of a patient and develop a treatment and client education plan.
3. Describe intravenous catheter maintenance and care.
4. Describe simple rehabilitation therapy exercises in dogs and cats.
5. Discuss established emergency protocols with regard to triage and stabilization of patients in emergency situations.
6. Identify the indications for a blood transfusion.
7. Describe the procedure for collecting blood, cross matching the blood, and giving a transfusion.
8. Describe methods of permanent identification of animals.
9. Describe reproduction of dogs and cats.
10. Discuss proper care of orphan animals or newborns, as appropriate for the species.
11. Describe care of the recumbent patient.
