General Chemistry 2
A continuation of General Chemistry 1 includes properties of solids, liquids and solutions, kinetics, chemical equilibrium, acid/base chemistry, precipitation, thermodynamics, oxidation/reduction, and electrochemistry. Recommended for students pursuing careers in science, engineering, health and/or technology fields. A solid math/algebra background is expected. Three class hours. Corequisites: CHE 104L. Prerequisites: CHE 103 with a grade of ‘C’ or higher.

Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Interpret phase diagrams for substances, based on intermolecular forces and the state of matter, (solid, liquid or gas).
2. Apply various calculations (molarity, molality and mole fraction) to solutions and apply those values to colligative properties (vapor pressure, boiling point, freezing point and osmotic pressure).
3. Determine the rate of reaction as a function of reactant concentrations and temperature using the principles of Chemical Kinetics.
4. Determine equilibrium constant for a balanced chemical equation.
5. Apply Le Chatelier’s Principle to chemical systems.
6. Conduct an acid / base titration (procedure and analysis) on known or unknown solutions.
7. Determine if a particular physical process or chemical reaction is spontaneous, based on an application of thermodynamic data and laws, (Gibbs Free Energy, Enthalpy, and Entropy).
8. Evaluate electrochemical cells using standard reduction potential data.
