General Chemistry 2 Lab

CHE 104L is the application of the didactic instruction for CHE 104 and a required co-requisite. Skills and performance in CHE 104L are assessed as a component of CHE 104 and therefore must be successfully completed in addition to all the requirements for CHE 104. CHE 104 L supports the concepts from the lecture (properties of solids, liquids and solutions, kinetics, chemical equilibrium, acid/base chemistry, precipitation, thermodynamics, oxidation/reduction, and electrochemistry) and covers basic lab skills, capturing information in a lab notebook, determining conclusions from experimental results and designing next experiments based upon previous results. Corequisite: CHE 104. Prerequisites: CHE 103 with a grade of ‘C’ or higher. Three lab hours.

Subject Code: CHE

Course Number: 104L

Credits: 1

Lab Hours: 3

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Apply various calculations (molarity, molality and mole fraction) to solutions and apply those values to colligative properties (vapor pressure, boiling point, freezing point and osmotic pressure).
2. Determine the rate of reaction as a function of reactant concentrations and temperature using the principles of Chemical Kinetics.
3. Apply Le Chatelier’s Principle to chemical systems in the laboratory setting.
4. Conduct an acid / base titration (procedure and analysis) on known or unknown solutions.
5. Apply standard reduction potential data to evaluate electrochemical cells.

Effective Term: Fall 2023
