Police

Studies factors which influence and shape the delivery of police services in American communities. Analyzes contemporary issues including styles of policing, police role, expectations and conflict, career concepts and professionalism, community participation and accountability. Teaches students how to evaluate their impact on police services in a given community. Prerequisite: CRJ101.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Explain the role of public policing as an institution of social control.
2. Explain the role the police play in addressing crime as a social problem.
3. Describe how the police achieve social control using various methods such as law enforcement, community service, or order maintenance.
4. Describe how perspectives and attitudes of police officers create a culture of law enforcement.
5. Explain how the culture of a police department or unit might support interactions of officers with the community.
6. Explain the organizational structure of the typical police department.
7. Explain contemporary issues (such as concerns and future challenges) of policing.
8. Describe the various strategies employed by law enforcement to address contemporary issues facing policing today.
9. Describe how values or ethical principles inform decision making in policing.
10. Communicate effectively in police situations.
