Principles of Fashion Merchandising

Explores the development of the fashion industry from farms and laboratories through retail and promotion, including merchandising, marketing, market structure, production, technology, and support services. Focus will be on how fashion industry decisions positively and negatively impact the economy, environment, resources, and people in society.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Explain the various factors (economic, sociological, and psychological) influencing contemporary fashion.
2. Explain the activities of and interdependency of the segments of the fashion industry.
3. Describe strategies businesses undertake to promote successful expansion.
4. Predict (draw conclusions on), target market purchasing behavior by analyzing the target market’s data (demographic, geodemographic, psychographic and lifestyle).
5. Articulate an issue or problem related to worldwide sustainability problems caused by the fashion industry.
6. Analyze ideas and data to debate how they impact worldwide sustainability problems caused by the fashion industry.
7. Develop a well-reasoned (logical) argument to form judgments and/or draw conclusions in the development of solutions to address worldwide sustainability problems caused by the fashion industry.
8. Describe how values and ethical principles inform industry professionals’ decision making regarding the sales of knockoff/counterfeit goods or animal products in the fashion industry.
9. Acknowledge limitations such as perspective and bias when discussing decision making on the sales of knockoff/counterfeit goods or animal products in the fashion industry.
