Surveys American history through the thematic lenses of disease, disability and death. Examines how these themes have influenced the political, social, cultural and economic landscapes through time paying special attention to voices long marginalized in traditional history narratives.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Examine how the themes of disease, disability and death have been powerful forces in American history spurring civic engagement and social justice action.
2. Explain how the thematic lenses of the course illuminate the diversity of life experiences in American society and promote a more inclusive historical narrative.
3. Discuss the complex ways in which racial, gender and class identities may shape the way we talk about and experience disease, disability and death.
4. Discuss the linguistic discourses in American culture involving disease, disability and death and how they have changed over time.
5. Locate and evaluate primary and secondary sources for bias, perspective and interpretation in order to construct a historical argument on a topic of interest.
