The American Civil War
Examines the coming of the Civil War-tracing the causes from the rise of slavery in America and the creation of the Constitution to westward expansion and diverging economic bases – as well as the military, political, and cultural aspects of the war itself. (For students with a grade of 85 or higher on the NY State Regents Exam, this course may be used to fulfill the SUNY General Education requirement for American history. For all others, this course will count as a general education elective.)

Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Identify and describe the major causes of the Civil War (Constitutional, economic, cultural, political, etc.)
2. Identify and explain the challenges to civic engagement – for both individuals and groups – over the course of the war.
3. Recount the major military events of the war and their impact on the outcome.
4. Explain how specific political and diplomatic events framed the onset, progression and outcome of the Civil War.
5. Explain how the cultures of the North and South created the conditions for war, its progression and outcome.
6. Discuss how the economics of slavery determined the action of political leaders North and South.
7. Review contrasting accounts of common historical figures and events for historical analysis.
