Survey of Mathematics

A study of various topics including an introduction to estimation, algebra, geometry, consumer mathematics, probability and statistics, with an emphasis on critical thinking and interpreting results. Other topics may be covered at the discretion of the instructor. MAT108 is a common selection by Liberal Arts students with fewer than three years of high school mathematics. Either MAT108 or MAT092 can be used to satisfy the GCC math proficiency graduation requirement Either MAT108 or MAT092 can be used to satisfy the prerequisite for MAT129, Statistics. MAT108 does not satisfy the prerequisite for any other math course. Although this course can satisfy your mathematics requirement for some GCC programs and transfer to some baccalaureate institutions, speak with an academic advisor to ensure that this course meets your goals. Prerequisite: MAT091 with a grade of C or better, or by placement.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Use elementary arithmetic skills to apply formulae
2. Calculate area and perimeter/circumference of a variety of two-dimensional shapes
3. Calculate volume and surface area of a variety of three-dimensional solids
4. Convert units between US Customary and Metric systems
5. Calculate percentages and percent change
6. Calculate simple and compound interest
7. Differentiate between theoretical and empirical probability
8. Calculate the probability of an event (E) using the appropriate formula for a given circumstance
9. Interpret a variety of tables and graphs using appropriate statistical analysis
10. Analyze a variety of basic statistical information to determine its meaning
11. Construct graphical representations of statistical data
12. Calculate measures of central tendency
14. Use the empirical rule and z-scores to interpret the normal curve
