Music Appreciation
Surveys music as a form of communication with emphasis on developing understanding and awareness of the techniques and means of using musical sounds for communication and expressing human emotions both actively, from a performer’s point of view, and passively as an informed, knowledgeable and discriminating listener.

Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Differentiate the basic organizational elements of music in composition among the six major historical periods in Western music (Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary).
2. Apply classification techniques to various aspects of music (composers, genres, instrumentation, stylistic characteristics, countries of origin, etc.) from any period.
3. Distinguish among musical styles of each period when listening to various samples of representative compositions.
4. Analyze musical compositions from any period.
5. Discuss the impact of various influences on music (history, philosophy, literature, art, politics, etc.) for any given period.
