Rock and Roll History
Surveys the development of rock and roll through a narrative of American cultural, political, and economic history. Examines race, gender, class, technology, and the music business as it relates to the creation of rock music in the United States and globally. Learning activities include critical analysis of audio and video recordings of various rock and roll styles, group discussions, creative writing projects, and listening assignments. 3 class hours.

Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Identify and describe the variety of music genres that led to the evolution of rock and roll.
2. Relate how the origins of rock music led to the development of rock and roll as a distinct style of music.
3. Discuss the important role that race, class, and gender played in various sub-genres of rock and roll throughout United States history.
4. Discuss how rock and roll evolved into various sub-genres, identifying a minimum of 5 distinct styles.
5. Identify various rock and roll artists and describe their distinctive contributions to rock music.
6. Analyze at least 3 rock music styles as they relate to specific political, economic, social or cultural events in American society, and the subsequent impact of that style on at least two different groups within American society.
7. Recognize the influence of rock and roll music as a communicator of American culture and values as it relates to the historical, social, cultural, or political development of diverse communities within the United States.
8. Review or critique a given audio or video version of a rock and roll piece, using appropriate musical vocabulary.
9. Explain how rock and roll music challenged societal norms by bringing awareness to social and racial justice movements throughout United States history and the role rock music played in relation to dynamics of power, privilege, oppression, and opportunity in society.
10. Analyze United States society and/or history, including the diversity of individuals within the rock and roll community.
11. Analyze historical and contemporary evidence to draw, support, or verify conclusions about the interconnectedness between historical events, societal/cultural norms and rock music.
