Exercise Physiology
Examines the functional capacity and the adaptations of the human body to the demands of sport and exercise. Metabolic, cardiovascular, and neuromuscular adjustments in relationship to exercise of varying intensities and duration will be studied. Additional topics include the relationship between physical activity and various diseases, as well as, the effects of ergogenic aids commonly used in sport and exercise.

Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Discuss micronutrients as they relate to physical activity.
2. Discuss macronutrients as they relate to physical activity.
3. Identify the energy pathways which may include: the phosphagen system, glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, the electron transport chain, lactic acid fermentation, the cori cycle, oxidative phosphorylation or beta oxidation.
4. Describe the human energy transfer during physical activity.
5. Analyze the body systems (pulmonary, neuromuscular, endocrine) as they relate to physical activity, using equipment from the human performance lab.
6. Compare and contrast ergogenic aids’ impact on physical activity.
7. Describe various exercise protocols which train the aerobic or anaerobic energy pathways.
8. Design various exercise programs to enhance muscular strength, muscular endurance, power or muscular hypertrophy.
9. Describe the effects of exercise has on various populations.
10. Analyze the impact physical activity has on obesity or body composition.
11. Apply the scientific method (develop a hypothesis or argument, discuss biases toward the argument, test the hypothesis, analyze and draw conclusions) and concepts in Exercise Physiology to solve problems presented using critical thinking and analysis.
