Introduction to Digital Photography
Presents the fundamentals of digital image capture using cameras and scanners. Emphasizes the making of images and the interpretation of their character in terms of subject and form: Classical photography with digital technology. Emphasizes the post-production work needed to bring images to an audience electronically, rather than intensive post-production experience with image manipulation, special effects, “new media,” or animation. Student to supply his or her own adjustable manual shutters speed and aperture digital camera and photographic supplies, batteries, memory cards and any necessary hardware accessories or software accessories to make the camera functional. Two class hours, two lab hours.

Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Demonstrate the proper use of manual digital cameras (aperture, shutter speed, ISO setting, and Raw vs Jpeg) and understand the different situations to use these variables for the proper exposure.
2. Demonstrate the proper use of Adobe Photoshop software and workflow.
3. Identify the most effective images chosen or assigned for specific purposes.
4. Evaluate the effectiveness of visual images in terms of their technical characteristics such as film density, print density & contrast.
5. Evaluate the effectiveness of visual images in terms of their aesthetic characteristics such as composition, tonal range and originality of the image.
6. Analyze photographs utilizing critique strategies that develop logical arguments to form clear judgments of the artwork. including defining technical specifications, visual elements of design in composition, and well-reasoned conclusions about conceptual narratives.
7. Use industry-standard vocabulary of digital photography as appropriate.
8. Identify the historical contributions made by the masters of digital photography, especially 1980-present.
9. Produce a portfolio containing exhibition-quality photographs.
10. Create a portfolio of exhibition-quality prints.
