Legal Technology & e-Discovery
This course will cover the fundamentals of computer technology to accomplish tasks performed by professionals in the legal industry. Topics examined include software applications involving document creation, assembly and management. Practical experience will be gained with Microsoft Office, presentation tools, legal timekeeping and billing software, case management, docket control software and litigation support software that includes E-filing, electronic discovery and ethical considerations.

Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Perform basic tasks such as creating commonly used legal documents in Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and Workshare.
2. Perform common tasks for opening up new client matters in the billing/case management software program Clio.
3. Draft and manage electronic communication through the use of Microsoft Outlook, including the importance of email security and calendar management.
4. Explain the basics of e-discovery, including terminology and how to perform common tasks using e-discovery software program Concordance.
5. Explain the use of trial presentation software Microsoft PowerPoint, and TrialDirector.
6. Identify existing forms of legal technology.
7. Practice legal technology tools through the use of software simulations and training tutorials.
8. Create and edit word processing documents that are unique to the legal environment, including the use of templates, macros, creation of table of contents and table of authorities.
9. Create and edit spreadsheets that are unique to the legal environment using multiple data types and Excel functions.
10. Discuss proper methods and procedures involved in document collaboration while ensuring all security and encryption protocols are followed.
11. Organize for timely completion of all assignments, exercises and projects reflective of the time constraints imposed on all attorneys and paralegals working in a legal environment.
