General Psychology
Introduces the scientific study of human and animal behavior. Topics include basic methodology, motivation, emotion, learning, memory, human development, personality, psychological disorders, and therapy. Prerequisite: completion of the Genesee Community College reading proficiency.

Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Explain why psychology is a science with the primary objectives of describing, understanding, predicting and controlling behavior and mental processes.
2. Describe common fallacies in thinking (confirmation bias, post hoc explanations, implying causation from correlation, etc.) that impair accurate conclusions and predictions.
3. Describe methods used by psychologists including their respective advantages and disadvantages.
4. Explain key concepts associated with biological psychology (neural communication, brain anatomy and physiology, organization of the nervous system, neural plasticity, consciousness, etc.).
5. Explain key concepts associated with cognitive psychology (learning, memory, problem solving, etc.).
6. Identify the types of development (physical, cognitive, social) that an individual experiences across the life-span.
7. Explain key concepts associated with social psychology (prejudice and discrimination, interpersonal processes, aggression, attitudes and stereotypes, etc.).
8. Identify core theories (psychodynamic, behavioral, trait, etc.) and assessments associated with personality psychology (projective, self-report, behavioral, etc.).
9. Explain key concepts associated with health psychology (causes of mortality, stress, poverty, social support, etc.).
10. Explain key concepts associated with clinical psychology (classification of psychological disorders, treatment of psychological disorders, etc.).
11. Identify the purpose of ethical standards set forth by the American Psychological Association.
12. Explain the advantages of sociocultural competence in psychological science and practice (historical context, systemic influences, generalizability, etc.).
