Survey of Psychopathology
Surveys mental and behavioral pathologies observed in western society. Explores causes, characteristic symptoms, and treatments, historical perspectives, diagnosis and classification, and relevant research. Prerequisite: PSY104.

Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Critique a current empirical research study in abnormal psychology for methodological soundness.
2. Review and accurately report findings from a given research study in abnormal psychology.
3. Utilize, as appropriate, information from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) to engage in the diagnosis of mental illness.
4. Apply American Psychological Association (APA) style to the writing of research papers.
5. Utilize discipline-specific library resources.
6. Discuss various theories within the field of abnormal psychology that explain the causes of mental illness.
7. Discuss the basic criteria that mental health professionals use in the diagnosis of some of the more common mental disorders (anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, etc.).
8. Discuss various therapies that are used to treat some of the more common mental disorders.
