Respiratory Care 1
Introduces major concepts of respiratory care, including cardiopulmonary assessment, oxygen therapy, pulmonary function testing, and the therapeutic rationale for these procedures. Laboratory includes hands-on practice of respiratory care procedures and critical thinking skills. Prerequisite or corequisite: BIO 152 with a grade of ‘C’ or higher. Corequisite: RCP LB1.

Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Discuss the history of the profession of Respiratory Care including Accreditation of RC Programs and Credentialing of Respiratory Care Professionals.
2. Identify the NYS Professional Licensure Act for Respiratory Care Practitioners.
3. Identify and describe the main structures in the thorax and upper airway tract.
4. Identify the primary and accessory muscles of ventilation and their function.
5. Compare the functions of the large airways and small airways.
6. Identify bulk oxygen systems and medical gas safety systems.
7. Explain how various types of medical gas delivery equipment are used.
8. Differentiate between low and high flow O2 therapy systems.
9. Explain the importance of humidity therapy.
10. Describe the common hazards and complications of aerosol therapy.
11. Perform a variety of patient assessments (breath sounds, vital signs, and bedside pulmonary functions, etc.).
12. Explain while demonstrating the proper technique for handwashing.
13. Explain while demonstrating the proper technique for patient positioning.
14. Explain while demonstrating the proper technique for infection control.
15. Describe the duties of the RT in assisting patients during a fire or emergency.
16. Identify electrical safety measures for patient care.
17. Discuss the importance of maintaining proper patient charts, records, including HIPAA standards.
18. Relate basic ethical principles to the personal care of patients.
