Fundamentals of Acting

Introduces basic acting techniques with emphasis on personal characterization. Student actors strengthen their self-knowledge and determine a unique point of view through individual and group improvisations, sensory exploration and text work.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Conduct personal warm-up routines using specific techniques (relaxation, centering, posture, vocal, physical, and breathing).
2. Apply character analysis procedural questions to a role (Who am I?, Where am I?, What surrounds me?, What are the circumstances?, What just happened the moment before?, What do I want?, What’s in my way?, How do I get what I want?).
3. Identify beats and overall objectives by scoring a script.
4. Use basic theatrical vocabulary.
5. Select appropriate materials for oneself.
6. Write an actor’s resume.
7. Perform two memorized contrasting monologues with a brief actor’s introduction.
8. Critique a live production.
9. Perform an animal study after researching a particular animal, focusing on animal behavior rather than “acting like” an animal.
