Veterinary Nutrition

Identify macronutrients, micronutrients, and their roles in dog and cat health. Understand pet food labels and marketing. Calculate energy requirements for various life stages and perform nutrition assessment. Examine the role of nutrition and feeding goals in disease management. Educate clients in dog and cat nutrition. Prerequisite: VET201 with a grade of ‘C’ or higher.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Explain the function of the six common nutrients.
2. Calculate energy needs of the dog and cat.
3. Identify the major minerals and vitamins and describe their physiologic role.
4. Describe health consequences of nutrient deficiency and excess.
5. Discuss the role of the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) in establishing standard nutrient profiles.
6. Evaluate pet food information, regulations and marketing strategies with a focus on validity and bias.
7. Differentiate nutrient profiles for animals in various life stages.
8. Summarize the physiologic and pathologic basis for the recommendation of therapeutic pet foods for various conditions (allergic, cardiovascular, cancer, canine cognitive dysfunction, obesity, diabetes, periodontal, feline hyperthyroidism, skeletal, gastrointestinal, renal, lower urinary tract disease, hepatic and acute and critical care conditions).
9. Describe the role of the veterinary technician in client education, nutritional assessment and counseling for nutrition recommendations in the small animal practice.
