Principles Veterinary Business

Training in the management of the day-to-day operations of a veterinary hospital. Emphasis will be placed on client relations and communications, inventory control, record keeping, and computer skills. Students will have the opportunity to perfect resume and cover letter writing and to practice job interview techniques. Prerequisite: VET201 with a grade of C or higher.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Discuss the legal issues surrounding the veterinary-client-patient relationship.
2. Perform basic business functions which may include computer skills, telephone skills, scheduling appointments, admitting and discharging patients, inventory control, completion and filing of paperwork, or financial transactions.
3. Develop client education materials.
4. Provide client education in a clear and accurate manner.
5. Discuss the roles of regulatory agencies and controlled substance regulations in veterinary medicine.
6. Maintain appropriate records and logs.
7. Explain appropriate sanitation and nosocomial prevention protocols for a veterinary facility.
8. Describe techniques used in crisis intervention and grief management.
9. Practice personal professional skills which may include resume writing, job interviewing, and team building or leadership skills.
10. Describe how values or ethical principles (personal, social, professional) inform decision making.
11. Identify and discuss how personal stress and compassion fatigue affect patient care and career satisfaction.
