Anesthesia & Surgical Nursing
Student will develop foundational knowledge of anesthetic agents, along with a working knowledge of common surgical procedures in small and large animals. Emphasis is on the preparation of the surgical patient, the care of the patient both pre- and post-surgery, pain evaluation, and record keeping. CPR and recognition of emergency situations, and the potential for human and animal hazards associated with anesthetic drugs and anesthetized patients. Prerequisites: VET 201, VET 234, VET LB4, VET 245, VET LB5, VET 246, VET LB6 each with a grade of ‘C’ or higher. Corequisite: VET LB7, VET 279, and VET LB8.

Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Identify a variety of anesthetic risk factors for patients, discuss the effect on the patient and how to minimize the risk.
2. Calculate dosages of appropriate drugs used in anesthetic protocols with accuracy.
3. Describe how the appropriate monitoring equipment can be used to evaluate a patient’s health status.
4. Discuss a variety of changes in patient status that would require intervention in collaboration with the attending veterinarian.
5. Identify emergency medical supplies.
6. Identify the indications for emergency drugs, equipment and supplies.
7. Describe a variety of routine surgical procedures and the appropriate monitors, equipment, surgical instruments and surgical supplies that are necessary.
8. Describe operating room sanitation procedures (operating room conduct, asepsis or post-surgical clean up).
9. Create client education instructions regarding home care for the patient.
