Lab for VET268

VET LB7 is the application of didactic instruction for VET 268 and a required co-requisite. Skills and performance in VET LB7 are assessed as a component of VET 268 and therefore, must be successfully completed in addition to all the requirements for VET 268. Emphasis on anesthetic procedures along with patient preparation and care, monitoring devices and techniques, maintaining operative room asepsis. Creation of post-op home care instructions. Prerequisite: VET 201, VET 234, VET LB4, VET 245, VET LB5, VET 246, VET LB6 each with a grade of “C” or higher. Corequisite: VET268, VET 279, and VET LB8.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Correctly identify the patient and the corresponding surgical procedure to be performed.
2. Identify anesthetic risk factors for the patient.
3. Calculate dosages of appropriate drugs used in anesthetic protocols with accuracy.
4. Perform anesthetic procedures on a patient, including induction and maintenance, using appropriate anesthetic drugs and anesthetic delivery systems.
5. Monitor the patient throughout the anesthesia utilizing the patient’s clinical signs and appropriate monitoring equipment.
6. Evaluate the patient’s status (hydration, pain, response to anesthetics and other drugs) utilizing the patient’s vital signs and appropriate monitoring equipment.
7. Respond to changes in patient status through communicating with and implementing treatments directed by the attending veterinarian.
8. Provide post-surgical nursing care.
9. Describe the use of surgical instruments, suture material and other surgical instruments.
10. Follow a protocol to sterilize surgical instruments and equipment.
11. Use and maintain non-sterile equipment necessary for a proper surgical suite.
12. Maintain emergency medical supplies.
13. Identify the indications for emergency drugs, equipment and supplies.
14. Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation procedures and respond to a variety of simulated emergency situations to produce a favorable outcome.
15. Support a veterinarian in routine canine or feline ovariohysterectomy or orchiectomy including proper patient positioning and preparation of the surgical site using aseptic technique.
16. Provide surgical assistance during routine canine or feline ovariohysterectomy or orchiectomy surgery.
17. Demonstrate operating room sanitation procedures (operating room conduct, asepsis or post-surgical clean up).
18. Maintain proper medical records including patient records, anesthesia records or controlled substance drug logs.
19. Create client education instructions regarding home care for the patient.
